The Town of Carstairs Council consists of one (1) Mayor and six (6) councilors, elected by the citizens of Carstairs every four (4) years. Elections are held according to the Municipal Government Act and the Local Authorize Election Act.
Important dates for the 2025 municipal election:
Election day: Monday, October 20, 2025
Nomination day: Monday, September 22, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to noon
Nominations will be accepted from January 2 to September 22, 2025 (noon), at the Town Administration building (844 Centre Street). You are encouraged to contact the Returning Officer to schedule an appointment.
Advanced voting: dates will be shared once available
Official Results Released: Friday, October 24,2025
Swearing in Ceremony & Organizational Meeting: Monday, October 27, 2025
Campaign Disclosure Filling: March 1, 2026

Candidate eligibility
You can become a candidate if the following apply to you:
- You are 18 years of age on nomination day
- You are a Canadian citizen
- You are a resident of the Town of Carstairs for six (6) consecutive months immediately before nomination day
- You are a Town of Carstairs resident on election day
Section 21 and 22 of the Local Authorities Election Act provide specific eligibility and ineligibility descriptions for candidates.
Becoming a candidate
To become a candidate in the 2025 Town of Carstairs municipal election, you must take the following steps:
- File a Notice of Intent form
- Submit your Nomination form and required $100.00 deposit
- Complete the Release of Candidate Information form
- Complete the Candidate Financial Information form
Notice of Intent
A notice of intent is a new process for the 2025 municipal election, Candidates who plan to run can only accept campaign contributions and incur campaign expenses once their notice of intent is filed with the Town of Carstairs.
Once you file a notice of intent, you will be added to a register of candidates*, which will appear on this webpage on available. Please note that filing a notice of intent does not mean your name will appear on a ballot. For your name to appear on a ballot, you must complete the nomination process during the nomination period, as indicated below.
For more information on the notice of intent, refer to section 147.22 (1) of the Local Authorities Election Act.
Nomination Process
For the candidate's nomination to be valid, the candidate must complete the prescribed Nomination Papers.
A completed form will:
- be signed by five (5) eligible voters, including signature, printed name, and address;
- have the Nomination paper and Candidate's Acceptance, Candidate Financial Information, and the Town of Carstairs Release of Candidate Information form completed; and
- Forms must be received by the Returning Officer located at the Municipal Office. It is recommended that nomination papers be hand-delivered where possible. The Returning Officer will review the package for accuracy and provide you with additional information about your campaign.
